Dana nature reserve (UNESCO reserve)

Dana Biosphere Reserve (BR) was established in 1993 with a relatively large area of 300square km. It covers a rugged landscape along the Great Rift Valley, and includes a series of mountain ridges, plateaus and desert plains. The Biosphere Reserve encompasses Jordan’s four different bio-geographical zones: Mediterranean, Irano-Turanian, Saharo Arabian and Sudanian penetration. Hence, it is home to the country’s most diverse nature.

Azraq wetland reserve

A 1.5km Marsh Trail through the reserve, which takes about 30 minutes to walk, gives an idea of the former beauty of the wetlands. The trail follows natural paths made by water buffalo, which still roam through the wetlands. Take a pair of binoculars and stop at the bird hide to spot ducks squabbling between the seasonal reed beds. A viewing hide overlooking the Shishan springs is worth noting: these springs once watered the entire wetlands, and the cooling sound of the wind amid thick reeds makes you forget how close the desert is.

Shaumari Wildlife Reserve

The oryx is a bovine that belongs to the mammal class is one of the largest desert animals of the Arabian region. A magnificent creature that symbolizes wisdom and strength. It can run at 60kph to escape predators (jackals, lions).

The Arabian name of this indigenous mammal is Al Maha, and it is the logo of Qatar Airways.

Four decades ago, this animal was widely spread in the Arabian peninsula but became extinct in the wild because of hunting for meat and horns. WW2 resulted in the availability of automatic rifles and high-speed automobiles. This encouraged the hunting of these animals, which resulted in a drastic reduction of this species. By 1965, only 500 Arabian oryxes were left in the wild, and as per sources, the last wild individual was killed in 1972. There are now 8,000 individuals in zoos, private collections, and in protected areas.

Day 4: Wadi Mujib

Siq Trail — canonying, (easy) 21JD / ppl

The Siq Trail is a canyoning hike and the most popular trail in the reserve. At the centre, you get fitted with a lifejacket and have the option to hire a guide. The trail follows the river through the dramatic canyon between towering cliff walls to the base of a large waterfall. As the canyon becomes narrower, the water gets deeper. You’ll wade through water, scramble over rocks and waterfalls, pull yourself along ropes and swim through deep water. This hike was such a fun experience and the best way to escape the heat of the day!

The Canyon Trail (free?)
Duration: 3–4 hours
Grade: Moderate to Difficult

The Canyon Trail follows a rugged mountain track until descending to the Mujib canyon. You’ll repel down the side of a 20m high waterfall, and follow along the Siq trail returning to Mujib Adventure Centre.

The Malaqi Trail (free?)
Duration: 4–9 Hours
Grade: Moderate to Difficult

The Malaqi Trail is a challenging hike. The route follows a rugged mountain track until descending to the Mujib canyon. The hike continues upstream to the junction with the Hidan River. Here there is a stop for lunch and you can enjoy a swim in the natural pools. After lunch, you’ll move on to descend a 20m high waterfall, and follow along the Siq trail returning to Mujib Adventure Centre.

Malaqi is Arabic for the junction where two rivers meet.

Ibex Trail (free?)
Duration: 3–4 hours
Grade: Moderate

The Ibex Trail follows the Dead Sea Highway before turning onto an upward trail into the nature reserve. The wide track takes you across a number of dry valleys towards the protected breeding area for Nubian Ibex. The trail continues along a road back down to the Mujib Adventure Centre. This trail doesn’t involve canyoning or getting wet.

Day 5: Dead Sea

Y’a des resorts qui offre accès à la plage contre des pieces: Al-Wadi Resort, Amman Beach, and O Beach. Very busy Friday & Saturday (weekend local)

La route de Madaba à Dead Sea Panoramic Complex est 30km magnifique

Lisan Peninsula (pointe sud de la mer morte)

The southern section of Jordan’s Dead Sea is where the potash industry is based. As you drive through, you can see the evaporation pools where potassium chloride, calcium, and bromine are extracted from the Dead Sea water. On the eastern side of the road, the small settlements are surrounded by fertile farmland where tomatoes and bananas are grown.

Ca a l’air ouf ! Mais pas très profond donc on pourra sans doute pas se baigner

L’église de John le Baptiste (extra)

Sitting 19 kilometers north of the Dead Sea’s northern tip, this archaeological and religious site is one of the most important and meaningful pilgrimage sites for Christian visitors to Jordan.

Most scholars believe that this is the site where Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist. During Pope John Paul II’s Holy Land tour in 2000, the site’s claim was officially sanctified by him.

Sodom & Gomorrah (extra — mais fun de dire qu’on y a a été)

Quand t’endends “Sodom et Gomorrah” tu peux interjecter “J’Y AI ÉTÉ”.

Sodom and Gomorrah were two legendary biblical cities destroyed by God for their wickedness. The names of the cities have since become bywords for sin and vice.

Their story parallels the Genesis flood narrative in its theme of God’s anger provoked by sin (see Book of Genesis 19:1–28). They are mentioned frequently in the prophets and the New Testament as symbols of human wickedness and divine retribution, and the Quran also contains a version of the story about the two cities. The legend of their destruction may have originated as an attempt to explain the remains of third-millennium Bronze Age cities in the region, and subsequent Late Bronze Age collapse.

3) Trekking Wadi Rum to the red sea

Day 7

Distance 64.9km
Duration 3 days
// or 3 days on camel back for *only* 285 JOD = 335€ 😨

Hiking and scrambling opportunities abound in Wadi Rum, and it’s tempting to add extra days to this itinerary to fully explore the desert. From Rum village (or a Bedouin camp in the protected area), you head south in the shadow of Jebel Rum past Lawrence’s Spring to the dunes around Wadi Waraqa. You’ll wild camp with a local Bedouin guide, and hopefully enjoy dinner cooked in a zarb (buried sand oven) under the stars.

From Wadi Waraqa, you turn east towards the tiny village of Titin, past quartz mountains to another campsite. This is at the last line of hills before you reach the Red Sea. From here, you follow another dry wadi towards a pass that gives you your first view of the Gulf of Aqaba. Descending through scree, you briefly come across an industrial depot before veering back on to sandy ridges and your last taste of solitude on the hike. As you approach the highway, there’s a tunnel you pass through; you know you’ve reached your final destination when you reach the cluster of hotels and dive shops that dot the beaches south of Aqaba. If you’ve done this as the final section of a through hike, congratulate yourself as you cool your feet in the Red Sea — you’ve just completed the most epic hike in the Middle East.

Visit the Jordan Trail (www.jordantrail.org) for route maps, GPS waypoints and detailed breakdowns of daily hikes.

Day 3: The King’s Highway part 1 — Madaba & Mt Nebo & Dead Sea

Madaba

The amiable market town of Madaba is best known for a collection of Byzantine-era mosaics. The most famous of these is the map on the floor of St George’s Church, but there are many others in different parts of the town, several of them even more complete and vibrantly colourful.

Mt Nebo

Mount Nebo is significant because of its role in the Old Testament. The Bible says that Mount Nebo was where Moses lived out his final days and saw the Promised Land, which he would never enter. Source
